Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Find answers to common questions about TypingMonk typing speed test. Learn how to use the tool, understand your results, and improve your typing skills.
What is WPM (Words Per Minute)?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute, which is a standard measurement of typing speed. It calculates how many words you can type in one minute. In typing tests, a 'word' is typically counted as 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. For example, if you type 300 characters in one minute, your WPM would be 60 (300 ÷ 5 = 60).
How is typing accuracy calculated?
Typing accuracy is calculated as the percentage of correctly typed characters out of the total characters you typed. The formula is: (Correct Characters ÷ Total Characters Typed) × 100. TypingMonk tracks both correct and incorrect characters in real-time, giving you an accurate measurement of your typing precision.
What test durations are available?
TypingMonk offers multiple test durations to suit different practice needs: 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 60 minutes. Shorter tests are great for quick practice, while longer tests help build endurance and consistency.
What are the different difficulty levels?
TypingMonk offers four difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Very Hard. Easy paragraphs contain common words and simple sentence structures. Medium includes more varied vocabulary. Hard features complex sentences and less common words. Very Hard contains technical terms, complex grammar, and challenging vocabulary. Choose the level that matches your current skill.
What does 'Error Counting' mean?
Error Counting lets you choose how mistakes are counted in your accuracy score. 'Final Only' means only errors that remain at the end of the test count (if you fix a mistake, it doesn't count as an error). 'Include Fixed' means all errors count, even if you correct them later. This helps you practice different typing approaches.
Is TypingMonk completely free?
Yes, TypingMonk is 100% free to use. There are no sign-up requirements, no hidden fees, no premium subscriptions, and no limitations on how many tests you can take. We believe everyone should have access to quality typing practice tools.
Do I need to create an account?
No, you don't need to create an account to use TypingMonk. You can start taking typing tests immediately. However, if you want to track your progress over time using the Dashboard feature, your test results are saved locally in your browser.
How can I improve my typing speed?
To improve your typing speed: 1) Practice regularly - consistency is key, 2) Focus on accuracy first - speed will come naturally, 3) Use proper finger placement and learn touch typing, 4) Take breaks to avoid fatigue, 5) Practice with different difficulty levels, 6) Review your mistakes and work on problem areas, 7) Use the Dashboard to track your progress over time.
What is a good typing speed?
Typing speeds vary by profession and purpose. Average typing speed is around 40-50 WPM. Professional typists typically type 65-75 WPM. Advanced typists can reach 80-100+ WPM. For most office jobs, 50-60 WPM with high accuracy is considered good. Remember, accuracy is often more important than raw speed.
Can I use TypingMonk on mobile devices?
Yes, TypingMonk is responsive and works on mobile devices, tablets, and desktop computers. However, typing speed tests are most effective on a physical keyboard. Mobile typing with on-screen keyboards may not accurately reflect your true typing speed.
How does the Dashboard track my progress?
The Dashboard automatically saves your test results locally in your browser. It tracks your WPM, accuracy, total tests taken, best scores, improvement over time, day streaks, and consistency. You can view your progress by day, week, month, or year with visual charts showing your improvement.
What paragraph lengths are available?
Paragraph lengths are automatically selected based on your test duration: 1 minute uses 100-word paragraphs, 3-10 minutes use 500-word paragraphs, 15-25 minutes use 1000-word paragraphs, and 30-60 minutes use 2000-word paragraphs. This ensures you have enough text to type for the full duration.
Why do I see different paragraphs each time?
TypingMonk uses a large database of paragraphs to provide variety in your practice. Each test randomly selects a paragraph from our collection based on your chosen difficulty level and length. This variety helps you practice with different vocabulary, sentence structures, and topics, making you a more versatile typist.
What should I do if the test doesn't start?
If the test doesn't start, try these steps: 1) Click on the text display area to focus the input, 2) Make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser, 3) Refresh the page and try again, 4) Check your internet connection if loading paragraphs, 5) Try a different browser if issues persist. The test should start automatically when you begin typing.
Can I pause the typing test?
Currently, TypingMonk doesn't have a pause feature. The test runs continuously for the selected duration. If you need to stop, you can refresh the page, but your progress won't be saved. For best results, choose a test duration that fits your available time and complete it in one session.
How is my typing speed compared to others?
TypingMonk focuses on your personal improvement rather than competitive rankings. Use the Dashboard to compare your current performance with your past results. This helps you track your own progress and set personal goals. Remember, consistent improvement is more valuable than comparing yourself to others.
What makes TypingMonk different from other typing tests?
TypingMonk offers several unique features: multiple test durations (1-60 minutes), customizable difficulty levels, flexible error counting options, automatic paragraph length selection, comprehensive progress tracking with Dashboard, real-time visual feedback, and completely free access with no account required. Our focus is on helping you improve through consistent practice.
Can I practice typing with my own text?
Currently, TypingMonk uses pre-generated paragraphs from our database to ensure consistent testing conditions and accurate WPM calculations. This standardized approach allows for fair comparisons across different test sessions and helps you practice with varied content that challenges different aspects of your typing skills.
What should I do if I make a mistake while typing?
If you make a mistake, you can use the backspace key to correct it. The test will show incorrect characters in red. You can choose to fix errors immediately or continue typing. With 'Final Only' error counting, fixed errors won't count against your accuracy. With 'Include Fixed', all errors count regardless of correction.
How often should I practice typing?
For best results, practice typing regularly. Daily practice of 10-15 minutes is more effective than long sessions once a week. Start with shorter tests (1-3 minutes) and gradually increase duration as you build stamina. Use the Dashboard to track your consistency and maintain a practice streak for motivation.
Is my data stored or shared?
TypingMonk respects your privacy. All test results are stored locally in your browser using localStorage. We don't collect, store, or share your personal information or typing data. Your progress is private and only accessible on your device. You can clear your data anytime by clearing your browser's local storage.
